Public Piety

Beware of practicing piety before men in order to be seen by them. When you give to those in need, sound no trumpet before you as the hypocrites do so as to be praised by men, for that praise will be your only reward. When you give, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, but give in secret so that only your father sees and great will be your reward in eternity. When you pray, do not stand on street corners or in public meetings as the hypocrites do so as to be praised by men, for that praise will be your only reward. When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father in private. And when you pray, do not pretend to flatter your father with empty phrases, like a manipulative fledgling, thinking you will be heard for your many words. Do not insult your creator with idle chatter, for he knows what you need before you ask. When you fast, do not look dismal and contort your face as the hypocrites do so as to be praised by men, for that praise will be your only reward. When you fast, comb your hair and wash your face, so that your fasting is a secret between you and your creator.
